WATiS - The Wadden Sea Information System for Environmental Research and
Management
The Wadden Sea is one of the rarest relatively undisturbed nature
systems in Europe. Its unique character, enormous importance for keeping
intact habitats of vast amounts of biological species, fascinating landscape
has led to considerable research and management efforts on national, as
well as international levels, in order to prevent the development of irreversable
environmental changes as a result of human impact.
The Wadden sea information system WATiS serves as a tool to facilitate
concerted action of the environmental research community and public officials,
involved in the nature conservation activities in the Wadden Sea region.
WATiS is desingned as a federal data system, i.e. there is a
central, common dataset used as a reference by many locally distributed
users, who are working mainly independly. The staff for the central data-managament
is located at GKSS.
A relational database, named WADABA, running with Oracle software
on IBM-SP2, is used for longterm safe and flexible data storage.
Specially designed programms allow easy retrieval of information in forms
of tables and thematic maps. You can use the the piloting system LOTSE
for a look into these and many more data.
