The Hnum tidal basin is part of the North Frisian Wadden Sea and is located between the islands of Sylt and Fr. Part of the Hnum tidal basin is a reference area for monitoring the undisturbed development of the Wadden Sea.
Objectives:
Hindcast currents and waves in the Hnum tidal basin for a real-time period of 4 complete years (1996-1999); grid size is 100 m.
Quantify the impact (bed shear stress, generated by the combined action of currents and waves) on the sea bottom of the Hnum tidal basin.
Identify characteristic numbers which describe the impact of currents and waves on the sea bottom adequately. "Adequately" means: the spatial distribution of a characteristic number correlates well with the spatial distribution of sediments and/or benthos in the Hnum tidal basin. A simple characteristic number could be the "4 years temporal mean of the bed shear stress" minus the "threshold bed shear stress for sediment erosion".
Methods:
"Wind, currents and waves are calculated simultaneously with a coupled numerical model, with the components "MKW" for wind, "TRIM" for currents and "k-model" for waves.
Field measurements in the Hoernum tidal basin for the validation of model results:
wave radar station WAMOS, positioned on land at Hoernum.
